As Seniors . . .
As a senior, I find that serving others has become a valuable part of my experience here at New Hampton School. In my younger days, I used to view service learning as a daunting task that I wasn't necessarily enthusiastic towards. As more and more service learning days have been completed and I have seen the effects on those who I have helped, it has opened my eyes to just how valuable serving others can be. I look forward to continuing to serve others in the future.

Over the course of the four years I’ve been at New Hampton School, service learning has changed tremendously. Overall, service learning is a great break from everyday classes and a great opportunity to branch out and help our local community. For example, the past two years we have spent time helping an elderly woman who lives across the street. Helping neighbors do work they can no longer do themselves is a great way for our school community to get involved with our surrounding community in a positive way.

Being a four year senior, I have had the opportunity to give back to the community in many different ways. I feel service learning has opened my eyes to see that a simple task for us can make a huge difference for others. Working with the local community has showed me just how valuable the work we do is. Service learning has made us grow as individuals and see the world differently. We now see how fortunate we are to have the things we do. I have enjoyed spending time with my advisee group to make a difference in other people’s lives.

Service Learning has been an integral part of our growth as New Hampton School Global Citizens. I have come to appreciate the range of experiences provided by the service program from hosting basketball clinics and helping our neighbors with yard work, to visiting local veterans. As a community we have discussed the importance of contributing to the improvement of the situations of those less fortunate than the members of Husky Nation, where we always have people who care for us and will help us at a moments notice. While we used to joke that service learning built character, we all understand now how important it is to any person’s growth as a human being.

Service learning has played a tremendous part in my four years at New Hampton School. I think service learning creates a great opportunity for the students and community to expand our help to our neighbors in need. Most of us would not usually take time out of our busy lives to help others and service learning has allowed us to do things we wouldn't normally and open up our minds.
